Let’s talk a little about HOUND BREEDS.

So, what is a Hound or how does one describe a Hound?

Generally speaking a Hound is a dog that has been bred and
designed to aid in a hunt. Hounds were bred to assist hunters
whether tracking or scenting their prey and/or chasing prey.

Understanding that Hounds (were bred to aid in a hunt); it's
then easier to understand there are two basic types of Hounds.
Scent Hounds and Sight Hounds.

The Hound Group is one of 7 purebred dog groups, currently
recognized by the American Kennel Club (AKC). The AKC has
ongoing discussions about splitting the Hound Group into 2
separate hound groups... Scent Hounds & Sight Hounds.
Let’s talk a little about SCENT HOUNDS.

What is a Scent Hound? How is a Scent Hound defined?

Generally, a Scent Hound is a dog that mainly “hunts by scent”.
One might say, that for Scent Hounds, it’s all about the “nose”.
Scent hound noses, are by their anatomy’s design, keenly able
to smell & track a scent. There are several reasons for their,
outstanding ability to scent, some are:
   * They have larger noses & nasal passages;
   * Some scent breed hounds have longer ears & looser skin
      (the ears & skin help sweep the scent to the nose);
   * Some scent breed hounds are lower to the ground
      (so they are lower to the scent);
   * But mainly their noses have hundreds of millions of cells to
      process scents.
             Compare special scent cells of noses:
             - human nose 6,000,000 cells
             - dachshund nose 125,000,000 cells
             - bloodhound nose, 200,000,000 + cells

unique noses & abilities. If you are interested in

Let’s talk a little about SIGHT HOUNDS.

What is a Sight Hound? How is a Sight Hound defined?

Generally, a Sight Hound is a dog that “hunts by speed & sight”.
For Sight Hounds, it’s a combination of a body built for “speed”,
along with very keen “eyesight”. Sight hounds, are by their
anatomy’s design, keenly able to see motion, keep prey in sight,
& use their speed to capture their prey. There are many
reasons for their unique abilities, some of them are:
   * They are usually a lean bodied dog;
   * They have long legs (for an efficient long, fast, stride);
   * They are deep chested (room for a large heart and lungs);
   * And a typical sight hound shaped head (long & narrow).
             About their long & narrow shaped head
             - This shape is also seen in wolves & other carnivores
             - This head shape provides their stereoscopic vision
                (vision that definately aides them in hunting)
             - This is referred to as Dolichocephaly
                (meaning disproportionately long & narrow)
